Retailers Accelerate Climate Action in Race to Zero Campaign

This week the leaders of H&M, Ingka Group (IKEA), Kingfisher, and Walmart together with the COP26 High Level Climate Action Champions launched a call to action for retailers to take ambitious climate action. The Race to Zero Breakthroughs: Retail Campaign aims to inspire more retailers worldwide to set science-based targets, working to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and committing to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in their operations and supply chains by 2050 at the latest.
Leaders involved with the Race to Zero hope the campaign inspires even more collaboration among retailers and “accelerate a whole-economy transition for a healthy, resilient, zero-carbon future.” Participants plan to will work closely with policymakers to help positively shape the regulatory environment, as well. The campaign is yet another signal of building momentum within the retail industry to be allies in the fight against climate change. In collaboration with member companies, RILA recently released a set of Retail Climate Priorities that acknowledges climate change as a challenge that must be met with collaboration among all stakeholders, including retailers, and identifies areas where the industry can join with policymakers to accelerate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

“Responding to the economic and moral imperatives of addressing climate change requires thoughtful and meaningful action. Leading retailers know the intricacies of navigating complex relationships and operational realities in the pursuit of sustainability. The retail industry is an ally in the fight against climate change and stands ready to partner with policymakers and provide constructive insights as we work towards achievable goals.”
