State Retail Associations

The retail industry is increasingly faced with a patchwork of state laws on complex issues related to everything from the COVID-19 response to data privacy.  State Capitols often serve as a policy laboratory, where good (and often bad) ideas are debated and tested. One some issues, a singular law in one state can create a de facto national standard for the entire industry because of the burden of compliance.  And as we saw in the South Dakota v. Wayfair case, legislation in one state can have a huge impact on policy for the entire industry—in this case, a positive one!

RILA works closely with our State Retail Association partners around the country to help tackle many of these critical issues, but your involvement at the state level is incredibly important.  There are too many issues, too many debates, and too much policy happening around the clock in state Capitols for leading retailers not to be involved.  RILA encourages all of our members to join state retail associations and get involved locally where so much is happening to impact the industry.
