RILA Calls for Bipartisan Collaboration Ahead of SOTU

Michael Hanson, senior executive vice president, public affairs, Retail Industry Leaders Association, issued the following statement ahead of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address to Congress:

Retailers are a part of every community in the United States, and they are keenly aware of the challenges facing the country, as they impact our stores, employees, and the families we serve every day.  Vulnerable supply chains, organized retail crime, and antiquated labor policies are among the obstacles retailers face as an industry, and while they are serious problems worthy of intense and rigorous debate, they are challenges worthy of bipartisan cooperation.

“Complex problems deserve deliberate and nuanced attention from our federal leaders. The retail industry supports more than 52 million jobs and is a part of every community in the United States. As our nation grapples with these policy challenges, the success of local retailers is an important barometer for how policies impact American families. As a nation we should prioritize economic growth and public safety, support a dynamic 21st century workforce, and promote open markets and free trade with strategic partners.

“Leading retailers stand ready to work with President Biden, Vice President Harris and members of Congress from both parties on ideas that will safeguard our communities and grow the economy for all Americans. Retailers remain optimistic that bipartisan solutions exist for the challenges that impact all of us.”
