Minnesota Revises Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Guidance

In November 2020, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) revised its guidance for annual reporting and onsite documentation of wastes managed through pharmaceutical reverse distribution. These changes include the following:

  1. Healthcare facilities no longer must separately report the volume of acute pharmaceutical hazardous waste. Facilities are only required to report whether they generated any acute pharmaceutical hazardous waste at a site during the calendar year.

  2. On-site documentation for reverse distribution is reduced to what is already required by federal regulation.

The revised summary of major recent and upcoming changes to pharmaceutical waste management in Minnesota may be found here. Additionally, a detailed discussion of pharmaceutical reverse distribution requirements may be found here.
