Climate & Sustainability

Retailers are leading efforts to reduce environmental impact and build more sustainable supply chains. RILA works with federal, state, and local policymakers to ensure climate and sustainability regulations are informed by sound environmental research and market impacts while supporting innovation and responsible growth across the retail industry.

Retail Climate and Sustainability Policy

Retail companies are among the most recognizable signatories and participants in climate action initiatives and have been positive contributors to climate dialogues, including by creating ambitious sustainability programs. These efforts include reducing energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste; ensuring safe, ethical manufacturing working conditions; addressing chemicals of concern; and empowering employees throughout the organization to pursue new sustainable innovation opportunities.

RILA is working with federal, state, and local lawmakers to ensure that legislative requirements related to operational, product, and packaging sustainability, including climate and waste reduction, are based on sound environmental and market-impact research. These requirements should advance sustainability and public policy objectives without undue burden on the industry or our customers, while avoiding unintended consequences that undermine environmental objectives.
