Climate & Sustainability
Retail leaders are advancing climate and sustainability solutions while working with policymakers to develop balanced environmental policies that reduce impact, strengthen supply chains, and support economic growth.
Retailers are committed to sourcing and delivering products that are safe, affordable, and responsibly produced. RILA works with policymakers and industry leaders to advance product safety, strengthen supply chain transparency, and support regulations that protect consumers while enabling innovation.
Consumers evaluate retailers based on a growing range of performance expectations that go far beyond just price. Leading retailers anticipate these expectations and are committed to sourcing products that reflect consumers' evolving preferences.
Retailers are paving the way to address environmental and social concerns in their direct operations and product supply chains. These efforts include reducing energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste; ensuring safe, ethical manufacturing working conditions; addressing chemicals of concern; and empowering employees throughout the organization to pursue new sustainable innovation opportunities. As federal, state, and local regulators develop policies to address environmental and social challenges, it is critical that these be drafted with full consideration of retail operations and supply chain complexities to avoid creating unintended consequences.
RILA is seeking opportunities to work with lawmakers to ensure safe, ethical manufacturing conditions through clear guidelines. These regulations should reflect the realities of 21st century global supply chains to provide transparency to stakeholders. RILA will also work with federal, state, and local lawmakers to ensure that legislative requirements related to operational, product, and packaging sustainability, including climate and waste reduction, are based on sound environmental and market-impact research. These requirements should advance sustainability and public policy objectives without undue burden on the industry or our customers, while avoiding unintended consequences.
