Retailers urge House to advance bipartisan penny legislation

RILA urges the House to pass the Common Cents Act to address the penny shortage and provide consistent federal guidance for cash transactions nationwide.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) issued the following statement about the inclusion of legislation addressing the ongoing penny shortage to the suspension calendar for next week:

“With bipartisan support, RILA urges the House to expeditiously pass The Common Cents Act, which addresses the nation’s ongoing penny circulation problems when it comes to the floor next week. Retailers and consumers still need clear federal guidance during the ongoing transition and to avoid a patchwork of state requirements. With passage, Congress will provide the certainty needed to protect cash transactions, support consistency across the country, and resolve an issue that has been negatively impacting millions of businesses across the country,” said Evan Armstrong, RILA’s senior vice president of government affairs.
