Retailers Report Rising Organized Retail Crime

Organized retail crime continues to threaten retailers, employees, and communities across the country. Findings from retail asset protection leaders highlight the growing scale of these incidents and the need for coordinated action to address the problem.

Organized retail crime (ORC) continues to pose a serious and growing threat to retailers, employees, and communities across the United States. Retailers are facing increasingly sophisticated criminal networks that steal large quantities of merchandise and resell it through online marketplaces and other channels.

A survey of asset protection leaders at major retailers found that a majority have seen a significant increase in organized retail crime incidents. These crimes not only create financial losses for retailers but also place employees and customers at risk.

The findings highlight the need for stronger coordination between retailers, law enforcement, and policymakers to combat organized retail crime and protect communities.

Key Findings from Retail Asset Protection Leaders

  • 67% reported a moderate to significant increase in organized retail crime.
  • 80% believe organized retail crime will continue to worsen.
  • 86% reported that criminals verbally threatened store employees.
  • 76% reported criminals physically assaulting store associates.
  • 40% reported criminals using a weapon during incidents.

Combating Organized Retail Crime

Retailers are working with policymakers and law enforcement to address the growing threat of organized retail crime. RILA supports solutions that improve coordination between law enforcement agencies, strengthen penalties for organized retail theft, and address the role of online marketplaces in facilitating the resale of stolen goods.

RILA Perspective

"Retailers commit an incredible amount of resources to keep stores safe for employees and customers. But combating the growing problem of organized retail crime has been tremendously challenging, particularly as criminals become more brazen and sophisticated in their operations and exploit online marketplaces to sell stolen goods."
