Safety Standard for Lithium-Ion Batteries Used in Micromobility Products

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) submitted comments to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding its proposed safety standard for lithium-ion batteries used in micromobility products, including e-bikes, scooters, and other battery-powered mobility devices. RILA supports the Commission's consumer safety objectives and efforts to reduce fire, injury, and other hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. 

In its comments, RILA encourages the CPSC to incorporate existing voluntary safety standards into any final rule and minimize unnecessary deviations from standards that are already widely used throughout the retail marketplace. The comments also recommend harmonizing federal marking and labeling requirements with existing state, local, and voluntary standards to reduce complexity, improve regulatory consistency, and support efficient compliance by manufacturers, importers, and retailers. RILA further recommends that the Commission provide a one-year implementation period to account for product development, testing, certification, manufacturing, and inventory transition timelines.
