Retailers Welcome Nomination of Buerkle to CPSC Chair

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) welcomes President Trump’s nomination of Ann Marie Buerkle to be the Chairman and Commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Buerkle, who currently serves as Commissioner and Acting Chair, would serve an additional seven-year term should she be confirmed.

“We are happy to see Commissioner Buerkle formally nominated to serve as Chairman of the CPSC,” said Kathleen McGuigan, senior vice president and deputy general counsel at RILA. “In her time as Commissioner and Acting Chair, Buerkle has consistently made an effort to reach out and collaborate with all stakeholders including retailers, manufacturers, and consumer advocates to ensure that products sold to consumers meet the highest safety standards. We look forward to continuing to work with Chairman Buerkle and the CPSC toward that goal in the future.”

In effort to continue working closely and proactively with the Commissioner Buerkle and the CPSC on issues related to product safety, RILA’s Kathleen McGuigan testified this week at the agency’s public hearing on agenda and priorities for FY 2018. McGuigan outlined the retail industry’s priorities and perspective on risk assessment, consumer relations, and how new technologies and innovation in the retail industry could impact the agency’s approach to product safety. RILA’s written comments to the CPSC can be accessed here.
