Environmental Advocacy Committee

Overview

Retail operations, supply chains and distribution systems are subject to a broad range of environmental compliance requirements including the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) regulation of hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), permitting under the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts, and the regulation of chemicals in products under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations that govern the transport of hazardous materials.

RILA launched the Environmental Advocacy Committee (EAC) in 2021 to enhance member engagement and strengthen its environmental advocacy efforts. Comprised of senior-level RILA member company executives responsible for setting environmental policy, EAC participants advise on environmental legislative and regulatory advocacy priorities and policy positions. The EAC reviews and provides input on regulatory comments, position papers and other policy documents. Additionally, the EAC advises the Retail Compliance Center (RCC) on environmental topics of interest and environmental compliance training needs to help inform the RCC’s development of educational programs, tools, and resource materials.

The EAC convenes quarterly calls and hosts one annual meeting held in conjunction with RILA’s Environmental Compliance and Zero Waste Networks.
