Live from the Retail Law Conference: Day 3

The 2019 Retail Law Conference wrapped up on Friday, but not before a few more key sessions and networking opportunities for attendees. See highlights from our last day in Nashville below.

The First Major U.S. Privacy Law Takes Effect

An in-depth and immersive look at important aspects of California’s comprehensive privacy law, this session kicked off the conference’s CCPA Boot Camp. Moderated by Meredith Slawe, Co-Chair Retail Group; Class Actions Team, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP, the session featured a “view from the outside” panel as well as a “view from the inside” panel, offering attendees difference perspectives on the law’s impact on the retail industry and the risk landscape associated with it. The Boot Camp also included four additional breakout sessions to offer insight into CCPA’s implementation moving forward.

The Ethics of Email and Social Media

Tom Spahn of McGuire Woods LLP presented on the evolving issues stemming from the widespread use of electronic communications, as well as the ethical concerns in legal professional conduct surrounding privacy, intracorporate communications, discovery, marketing, and more.

Retail Law x Design Thinking Camp

Attendees toured Vanderbilt University’s Wond’ry Innovation Center and participated in an interactive session examining retail legal department challenges by applying key steps from design thinking.
