American Fall Favorites Hit with More Tariffs

The Trump Administration’s trade policy agenda has yet to slow down here in DC. As the President turned up the heat on China, it’s unfortunate that Americans are the ones feeling the burn.

Like many of you, my end-of-summer ritual includes cleaning up my BBQ grill and putting away my hiking backpack (both of which are on the tariff list!). As I go back to packing school lunches, I’m hopeful that this trade war’s impact on teachers, small businesses, and the millions of American consumers will cool down with the weather.

But just as Americans turn their attention to favorite fall weather activities, we’re finding ourselves in the crosshairs yet again in our ongoing trade dispute with China.

On September 1, the Trump Administration began implementing another round of new tariffs on products imported from China, identified in List4A from USTR. The President announced last month that tariffs on these products – reflecting an estimated $112 billion worth of imports from China – would increase from 10% to 15%. That is on top of the tariffs U.S. companies and consumers already pay on these items.

In reviewing the products included on List4A, it has become clear that these tariffs will indeed impact consumers, potentially raising the cost of goods associated with America’s favorite past times – baseball, football and tailgating, golf, hockey, and fishing and camping.

RILA and our member companies continue to raise concerns about the Administration’s penchant to use of tariffs as a means to burn China. While businesses support the idea of correcting China’s bad behavior and fighting for a more fair and balanced trading relationship, increasing tariffs on goods imported from China means Americans are the ones paying the price, not China. Simply put, tariffs are taxes Americans pay.
