Retail Privacy Leaders Gather In DC

Last week, RILA hosted 36 privacy executives from 22 retail companies for an annual meeting of the Association's Privacy Leaders Council. The meeting was hosted in Washington, DC, where the conversation around consumer privacy has been heating up over the last several months.

As retailers think about their approach to privacy and their role as actors in one of the most consumer-facing industries in our economy, the meeting was an opportunity for privacy executives to benchmark and network with peers, learn from operational experts and policymakers, and share leading practices.

Starting out the day, attendees were joined by Rohit Chopra, commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), who shared insights into the FTC's enforcement practices and privacy priorities for the year.

Continuing the conversation around federal privacy policy, Alex Hoehn-Saric, chief communications & technology counsel for the House Energy & Commerce Committee, participated in an interview with NIKE Director of Global Digital and Innovation Policy Piper Crowell, during which he offered the House perspective on the issue. To share the Senate's perspective, Crowell also interviewed Olivia Trusty, policy director for the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Shifting focus to privacy operations at the state level, PwC's cybersecurity and privacy team led a roundtable discussion on implementing the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the implications of the law for privacy operations nationwide. In addition, RILA Vice President of Innovation Nicholas Ahrens and Director of State Affairs & Advocacy Brian Rose presented on the state privacy policy state of play.

The group was also joined by Daniel Clarke, president of IntraEdge Products and Solutions, who presented on leveraging technology for privacy compliance. Attendees also participated in a robust benchmarking session on key privacy topics, including strategy and governance, data lifecycle management, individual rights processing, third party accountability, and training and awareness.
