Last week, leaders from across industries met in New York for Climate Week, an annual opportunity to convene around the shared goal of addressing the global challenges related to climate change. The week was marked by a series of announcements from the business community committing to do their part to combat climate change. Retailers, who have been consistently upping their sustainability-related commitments over the last several years, were among those setting new company goals.
By recognizing their ability to enact change within their organization, retailers are increasingly becoming corporate leaders in clean energy and sustainability. With each new commitment to action, some of America's most recognized retailers are proving themselves to be not just our favorite stops for electronics, groceries, or home goods, but true corporate stewards for advancements in clean energy, carbon emissions, circular economy, and more.
Highlights of retailers' announcements from Climate Week are below.
- Gap Inc., NIKE, Inc., Levi Strauss & Co., GUESS, EILEEN FISHER, and VF Corporation announced they are joining the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI), committing to set emission reduction targets consistent with global efforts to limit warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius.
- Walmart and IKEA Food Services were among companies committing to simplify food date labels worldwide by 2020, with the goal of reducing food waste.
- H&M announced a commitment to become climate positive by 2040, and announced their Close the Loop Demin campaign, which uses post-consumer recycled textiles.
- IKEA recently completed new rooftop solar installations on future stores in Indiana and Texas, and was named as a founding member of EV100, a global initiative bringing together forward looking companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.
- A report released by Apex Clean Energy and GreenBiz found that most large corporations plan to be active in the renewable energy (RE) market over the next five to 10 years (84 percent) and 43 percent plan to be more aggressive in the next 24 months. The retail industry leads those planning to be more aggressive, at 70 percent.
