Retailers Support Our Nation's Veterans and Service Members
As one of the nation's largest employers, retailers know firsthand the immense value veterans bring to the workplace and to our communities. On Veterans' Day and every day, our members take every opportunity to say thank you and give back to those who have given so much for our country. Below is a list of retailers taking steps to support our veterans throughout their business operations.
How Our Members Are Giving Back
CVS Health recognizes the value of military service and appreciates our nation’s veterans’ unparalleled skills and experience, and we are proud of our longstanding tradition of hiring qualified veterans and military spouses. CVS Health's Heroes2Careers program is dedicated to hiring those who have served our country while executing on our commitment to build an inclusive, diverse workforce.
This Veteran's Day, CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation issed $580,000 in grants to Easterseals to support local services that ensure access to healthcare and smoking cessation resources for Veterans and military families. As part of the funding, Easterseals has received $70,000 for national programming and six Easterseal affiliates who excel in programs that respond to the local needs of Veterans, their family members and caregivers will each receive a $10,000 grant. In addition to the grants that will expand access to care, CVS Health Foundation has also donated $450,000 in grants to help advance Easterseals' commitment to helping Americans live tobacco-free lives, including those populations served by Easterseals which have a higher incidence of smoking among Veterans and their caregivers.
To recognize and thank the military community for their service and sacrifice, Dollar General is offering an 11 percent discount on qualifying purchases to veterans, active military and their immediate family members both in stores and online on Saturday, November 11, 2017. Providing this discount is just one way Dollar General shows its continued support, gratitude and appreciation to those who have served and continue to serve the country. The Company is proud to be a longstanding supporter of the military community through initiatives including veteran discounts, its military employee resource group and the initiation of the Paychecks for Patriots hiring campaign that pairs veterans transitioning to civilian life with meaningful employment opportunities.
The Home Depot recognizes that members of the U.S. military community are highly skilled, motivated and hardworking. In an effort to support this community, The Home Depot joined forces in 2004 with the U.S. Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs to provide rewarding and challenging career opportunities in our stores and distribution centers across the nation for current and former members of America’s military. The Home Depot Foundation and Team Depot, a 400,000-strong army of associate volunteers, work to improve the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families and aid communities affected by natural disasters. From September 7 through Veterans Day, thousands of Home Depot associates will #CHOOSETOSERVE those who have served us all by moving from the aisles to their communities for our annual Celebration of Service season.
The Home Depot Foundation has given more than $213 million to veterans-related causes since 2011.
Lowe's has been helping military customers love where they live for more than 70 years and is proud of its long history of honoring America's servicemen and women. The company was founded by Carl Buchan, a World War II Army veteran who wanted to make home building and home improvement affordable for returning GIs and their families. Today, Lowe's continues to support military families through a wide range of affordable products and services, career opportunities and community giving.

In 2015, Men's Wearhouse partnered with Kenneth Cole to launch the "AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole" collection which benefits United States militar veterans. A one percent contribution from all everyday gross sales of "AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole" products go toward helping veterans transition back into the workforce. Hire Heroes USA, a Veteran’s transition organization, and Help USA, a housing and supportive services organization to the homeless, are partners with the cause. Proceeds from the sales will assist in the successful counseling and career placement for thousands of veterans, and provide transitional housing for those fighting homelessness.To date, along with the Kenneth Cole Foundation, Men's Wearhouse parent company Tailored Brands has donated over $1.6 million to our US charity partners.
Publix actively recruits veteran employees to join their ranks throughout the year. From distribution centers to information technology to the bakery, Publix offers a plethora of opportunities for veterans to apply the skills they learned in the armed services. Sears Holdings is a proud participant in "Roll Call Chicagoland." Formed in 2012, Roll Call Chicagoland includes veteran-friendly employers, veteran employee resource group members, veteran advocates, non-profits and educational providers serving military service members and their spouses. The group provides monthly networking events alternating in the western and northern suburbs of Chicago. Roll Call Chicagoland is built on four pillars: networking, support, development and camaraderie.
The organization's mission is to provide informal gatherings of transitioning veterans, established veteran professionals and dedicated businesses and veteran advocate partners to share camaraderie, professional development and practical strategies in seeking meaningful employment. Roll Call Chicagoland connects the right people with the right champions to inspire more meaningful military-to-civilian career paths and the professional growth needed to enrich the leader in all of us.
Companies within the Sears Holdings family have been proud supporters of America's military, and our employees serving in the Armed Forces, since World War I. Fast-forward 100 years, and the partnership is just as strong. Today, Sears Holdings companies employ 25,000+ veterans and more than 1,500 active members of the Reserve and National Guard. Each year, Toys“R”Us hires thousands of U.S. veterans, while also supporting our team members who have been deployed overseas or domestically. To make it even easier for men and women in uniform to shop with us, Toys“R”Us recently launched a test with the Naval Exchange Stores (Nexcom) to stock shelves with toys from our exclusive science education product line, at locations in Virginia, Hawaii and California. Military stationed at Fort Bliss Military base in El Paso, Texas also have a Toys“R”Us express store located on the base. For the past 14 years, Toys“R”Us has also been the number one corporate partner for the Marine Corps Foundation’s Toys for Tots program. Each holiday season, the Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys and distributes them as Christmas gifts to children in need in local communities around the country.
On Saturday, November 11, all Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores (excluding express and outlet stores) will host a National Veteran’s Appreciation Day in-store event from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (local time). Customers with a valid Military identification card will receive 15% off in-store purchases* from Saturday, November 4 through Saturday, November 11.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW) and drugstore chain Walgreens announced a collaborative agreement May 6, which will help improve mental health care for Veterans through enhanced education, access to resources and outreach. VA, VFW and Walgreens will work together to reach Veterans in communities across the country with targeted initiatives to address mental health awareness and treatment, Veteran suicide prevention and opioid overdose education.
Through new and expanded strategic recruiting relationships with external organizations, as well as ongoing collaboration with its employee-driven business resource groups (BRGs), Walgreens has been encouraging even more military veterans to consider new careers – not just in its retail stores, but also in our supply chain, information technology and staff functions.
