The month of July historically is the busiest month in Washington, DC. This year has been no exception. Before the August recess period, where members of Congress spend the month at home in their districts, there was a flurry of activity underway in Congress. Members, hoping to promote their accomplishments back home during the break, were working with colleagues to finalize legislation that has been under consideration.
This year’s big issue? Health care.
Over the past month we have worked constructively with lawmakers to promote the accomplishments of the retail industry, encourage reforms that will protect the employer-based system, and find ways to reduce costs for all. The process has been a difficult one, with no interest unaccounted for in the debate. I hope this newsletter sheds more light on how the process has evolved and where it is headed.
Another important issue that has been on our minds is the Employee Free Choice Act. The bill, which many considered a fait accompli in January, has yet to be considered. This delay is a direct result of the good work done by RILA, our members and many others who have held strongly together in opposition to this dangerous legislation. Rumors of compromise legislation abound. These rumors are short on substance and are likely aimed to create fractures in the business community’s heretofore united front.
Don’t take the bait!
RILA is working closely with the broader business community to ensure that we remain fully coordinated. RILA will vigorously oppose any compromise that includes binding arbitration and other provisions being discussed – and we ask that you urge your peers in other companies to remain strong in opposition to any compromises being floated.
These are just two of the many issues impacting the employer/employee relationship under consideration this year. RILA remains dedicated to promoting the retail industry’s perspective in these debates and welcomes your thoughts and input as issues arise.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me or any members of the RILA team if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Katherine LugarExecutive Vice President, Public Affairs
