RSI Landlord-Tenant Collaborative MeetingA persistent issue common to both retail landlords and retail tenants is the need to implement sustainable design, construction and operating practices. However, the retail lease, quite often executed years before, defines the obligations for each party and outlines how costs will be allocated today and for the term of the document. Beyond the lease agreement is a wide array of operating practices involving sustainability that each retail company and landlord organization adopts, as well as the need for compliance with a plethora of local codes, which vary from the strictest to the most lenient. How the two parties reconcile this difference for mutual advantage is the primary objective of the desired dialog between RILA and ICSC members.RILA’s Energy & GHG Emissions Committee proposes to convene a panel of leading retail and landlord representatives to join together in a solutions-oriented discussion of the key issues and identify solutions for further exploration. ICSC’s Subcommittee on Environmental Issues and Sustainability agrees to work co-operatively toward this goal.It is anticipated that this effort will result in the collaborative engagement of participants in a facilitated discussion to identify enduring, win-win opportunities that are articulated and disseminated throughout the retail industry. For more information on the meeting and collaboration efforts, please contact Ben Hobbs at Ben.Hobbs@rila.org.
