Suppliers are sourcing goods farther from their DCs, usually landing their goods at one of many ports along the coasts.  Some suppliers transport the goods to their DC and then the supplier or retailer moves the goods from the vendor's DC back to one of the retailer's DCs. By focusing on Direct-to-Store and DC Bypass initiatives, including the ability to crossdock goods if necessary, retailers can eliminate unnecessary handling and movement of goods. These efforts will result in reducing transportation costs, handling costs and damage costs (due to less handling/loading/unloading), as well as decreasing unproductive transportation miles.
